As climate change accelerates, so the need grows for green infrastructure that will contribute to the resilience and habitability of urban spaces. Coastal cities situated on river systems will be affected by decreasing rainfall, increasing temperatures, rising sea levels, and growing salinity of river water. These changes will alter wetland and river ecosystems, modify riverbanks and biodiversity, and affect local economies and ways of life. This work, which addresses the urban and suburban areas of the city of Valdivia in Chile, seeks to identify locations in which green infrastructure solutions would help to mitigate the effects of climate change. The work involved data collection and a multivariate analysis upon which it is based the construction of a series of maps intended for use as reference materials to support the formulation of adaptation strategies. It has been analyzed opportunities for reconciliation of urban green areas with elements of the local territory through the strengthening of natural systems. The research contributes to the transition from traditional to sustainable urban planning strategies in light of new variables introduced by the ongoing climate transformation.
